No limitations on All That Can Be Imagined
Returning to the fall semester with over 700 students, the student body at Allen University continues to thrive despite the trials and tribulations of a global pandemic. At the close of 2020, the course catalog has seen exciting new offerings, including online programs and an Education Program designed to prepare students to become certified teachers that launches in Fall 2021.
The University launched two fully online programs in the fall of 2020. The Allen University Online academic tracks include a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Arts in Human Services. The two online degree programs add to the University's catalog of nine traditional undergraduate degree programs and one traditional master's programs. The online program is ideal for adult learners but open to all students looking to pursue a degree in the offered areas. While the new programs are exciting, students continue to excel in existing programs, including the Dickerson Green Seminary Master of Divinity program that equips graduates to engage in Christian congregational life and other settings in which the expectation is to think theologically and minister to the spiritual, social, and physical development of all people within a Christian spiritual context.
The Education Program will be housed inside of the, currently under restoration, Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital. In its prime, it once stood as the only place for African-American patients in Columbia, SC to receive care. The hospital once housed a full functioning pharmacy, laboratory, radiology (x-ray), two operating rooms, and a capacity for 50 bedded patients. Now added to the National Register of Historic Places, the Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital is preparing to continue to change the trajectory of African- American lives. The Waverly Hospital project aims to repurpose the facility to house the new education program and hold The Institute on Civility, which will feature a permanent monument to the Emanuel Nine, The Waverly Wall Museum, and The Palmetto African American Hall of Fame.
The restoration project has picked up steam with the receipt of a $1.5 million dollar investment from The Boeing Company in November of 2020. The Boeing Company and Allen University announced the partnership to establish the Boeing Institute on Civility at Allen University as a national hub for teaching and provide programming aimed at advancing civil discourse in America and across the globe.
“We don't anticipate any limits in the things that we set out to do. We are thoughtful and careful about not overextending ourselves. But for those things that we set out to do, we fully anticipate that we're going to succeed at it,” explained Dr. McNealey. With the charge of a visionary leader, to continue to achieve All That Can Be Imagined, Allen University is thriving and has her eyes set towards continued success.
